Material Selection
Choose the slab, then choose the view
What to evaluate when selecting a full stone slab for an island, countertop, fireplace, or other major feature.

A small sample cannot show the whole story
Full slabs reveal movement, variation, fissures, color shifts, and the scale of the veining. Those characteristics determine how the material will read once it spans a large surface.
Decide where the strongest movement belongs
For an island or feature wall, identify which part of the slab should become the focal area. Discuss orientation, seams, cutouts, overhangs, and bookmatching before fabrication begins.
Confirm the exact material
Photograph and identify the approved slab. If the project requires more than one, review them together so color and movement feel compatible across the installation.
Pro Tip
View the full slab upright and from several distances before approving it. Discuss seam locations and the preferred focal area with the fabricator.
Understand performance and maintenance
Ask whether the material is natural stone or engineered, what staining, etching, heat, sealing, and cleaning considerations apply, and whether the finish changes those expectations. Product and fabricator guidance should inform the final choice.
Approve the fabrication plan
The exact slab, seam map, edge profile, overhangs, cutouts, faucet holes, support, and vein direction should be documented before cutting. Once fabrication begins, design flexibility becomes very limited.
