Paint Strategy

How to choose paint sheen for each room

Compare matte, eggshell, satin, and gloss by reflected light, surface texture, expected wear, and the finish you want to see.

Sheen changes the same color

A matte finish absorbs more light visually while higher sheen reflects more. Under strong or angled light, that reflection can call attention to surface texture and repairs.

Match the surface and use

Consider traffic, moisture, cleaning expectations, trim details, and the room's lighting. A finish that works beautifully on a quiet bedroom wall may not be the best choice for every door or bath.

Do not choose from a chip alone

Sample the exact paint color in more than one sheen on the actual wall or a movable test board. View it in daylight and under the lighting that will be used at night.

Check the product, not just the label

Sheen names and performance vary among paint lines. Review the chosen manufacturer's finish options and cleaning recommendations with the painter.

Pro Tip

Record the brand, product line, color, and sheen for each location. 'White satin' is not enough information for a future touch-up.

Which sheen works for walls and trim?

Matte or eggshell can create a quieter wall, while satin or higher-sheen finishes reflect more light and often emphasize trim details. Cleaning needs and product performance vary, so compare samples and the manufacturer’s specific paint line rather than applying a blanket rule to every kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom.

Why do touch-ups sometimes show?

A repair can differ in texture, application method, age, or sheen even when the color code matches. Keep the exact brand, line, finish, and color in your home record, and ask your painter how to blend future repairs on prominent walls.
